Governor Warner said:

“Credit unions have always been strong, community-based partners in maintaining the high quality-of-life we work so hard to maintain across the Commonwealth. LYNCHBURG, Va.—The Virginia Credit Union League, the statewide trade association representing 202 not-for-profit credit unions and their 3 million member-owners, is endorsing Gov. Mark Warner in his bid for the U.S. Senate.

“Gov. Warner is a friend and fan of member-owned credit unions, and we are proud to endorse his candidacy for the U.S. Senate,” said Virginia Credit Union League President Rick Pillow. “He is a proven leader with a vision for a stronger America and a commitment to results-oriented government that transcends partisan politics.

“We know, too, that Gov. Warner shares our view that everyday people can make a difference in their communities and our nation,” said Pillow. “Democratically-controlled, member-owned credit unions are a shining example of that belief, empowering families to chart their own course to secure financial futures.”

The League announced the endorsement during a reception for Gov. Warner at the national Credit Union House in Washington, D.C., just blocks from the U.S. Capitol. Eighty credit union supporters from across the Commonwealth attended the event, which was co-hosted by the Credit Union National Association, the national trade association for America’s 8,300 credit unions.

“In an election year in which the so-called ‘pocketbook’ issues may well hold even greater significance for voters, we encourage the millions of credit union member-owners in Virginia to support Gov. Mark Warner,” said Pillow. “Credit unions are tackling many of the economic issues confronting our nation, and we know Gov. Warner supports us in our mission to provide consumer-friendly products and services that put the needs of people first.”

Virginia’s credit unions boast 3 million member-owners and control some $61 billion in total assets. They serve members of the armed forces, educators, state and federal government employees, churches, and thousands of businesses and organizations. Some are also chartered to serve specific geographic areas across the Commonwealth, including many lower-income areas.
